Mindful Eating

What is it?

Mindful eating merges the practice being aware of the present moment, or mindfulness, with eating habits. This means eating slowly and without distractions.

How does it help?

  • Helps develop a healthy relationship with food

  • Enhances digestion

  • Helps you tune in to your hunger and fullness cues

“When practiced to its fullest, mindful eating turns a simple meal into a spiritual experience, giving us a deep appreciation of all that went into the meal’s creation as well a deep understanding of the relationship between the food on our table, our own health, and our planet’s health.”

- Thich Nhat Hanh

Tips for Mindful Eating

  • Before eating, take a deep breath and smell the food. Notice any interesting textures or colors.

  • Take time to count how many times you chew your food. Try to chew each bite 15-20 times.

  • Turn off the TV or other distractions when eating

  • Eat while sitting down at a table

  • Describe specific attributes about the food. Is it tangy, creamy, bitter, sweet, crunchy?
